Your Daikin Mini Split Isn’t Heating? Let’s Narrow It Down Before You Call a Tech.

Alright, so your Daikin mini split is blowing cold, or barely warm, air. You've checked the thermostat, it's set to heat, and the outdoor unit is humming. Frustrating, I know.

It's tempting to Google the error code and immediately call the most expensive HVAC tech in town. But from my seat—managing a maintenance budget for a 20-person commercial space where we've tracked every HVAC invoice over six years—I can tell you that a surprising number of 'not heating' calls can be solved with a flashlight and a little bit of patience. The trick is figuring out which camp you fall into.

This isn't a one-size-fits-all fix. Your situation depends on what's actually going on inside the unit. Let's look at three common scenarios.

Scenario A: The Airflow is Weak (Almost Always the Filter)

This is the most common culprit, and the easiest to fix. If you put your hand in front of the indoor unit and the airflow feels weak or uneven—even though the fan is running—you're likely dealing with a clogged air filter.

The Fix: Check your Daikin mini split air filter. If it looks like it's covered in a layer of grey felt, it's shot. A clogged filter is the number one reason for reduced heating performance. The unit can't pull in enough air to heat it up.

Now, a note on filters. Most standard ceiling cassettes and wall units use a washable mesh filter. The Fix: Switch your ceiling fan to run counter-clockwise (the 'winter' direction) at a low speed. This gently pulls air up from the floor and pushes the warm air, which is trapped at the ceiling, down the walls. It's a subtle fix, but it makes a huge difference in perceived comfort.

Also, take a look at your thermostat placement. If a draft from a warm ceiling fan is blowing directly on the thermostat, it might think the room is warmer than it is and cycle the unit off prematurely.

How Do You Know Which One You Have?

Here's a simple checklist I use when I'm on the phone with our facility manager:

  1. Is the fan running but weak? Go to Scenario A (Filter).
  2. Is the fan screaming, but no heat? Go to Scenario B (Frozen Coil). Check the unit for ice. If ice is present, let it thaw completely before cleaning.
